Tom Ellis is a producer and DJ from Dolgellau in the United Kingdom, also known as Thomas J. Ellis. He works in microhouse, minimal, funk, house and tech house, and is associated with the project Molimo.

Trimsound and label work

Ellis co-founds and co-runs Trimsound with his friend Leif. He also founds Minordust, a sister label to Trimsound, which serves as a free netlabel focused on after-party music. His releases appear on Trimsound, and the label is one of the central parts of his work.

Releases and collaborations

His first release appears on Mindtours as MT06 in 2004. After that, he releases material on Trimsound and Mindtours, then on Morris/Audio citysport through the Trimstyle series, a set of split EPs with Leif that presents a funk-driven minimal house style. In 2005, his day after yesterday EP on Logistic Records shows a warmer and jazzier side of his production. He also works on a Trimsound remix of Minimono’s ndiki on Telegraph, made collectively by Leif, Ellis and his brother Joe.

Project Ekkis and performance

Ellis creates Ekkis as a project for downtempo productions, allowing him to work outside the limits of dancefloor-focused music. He becomes known for DJ sets made up largely of original material, and for performing the Trimsound live show with Leif using live sequencers, bass guitar and percussion to build live remixes and jams.

Reputation and label presence

His music circulates internationally and is played by DJs including Akufen, Richie Hawtin, Daniel Bell, Magda and Zip. His releases also appear on a wide range of labels, including Floppy Funk, Archipel, Adagio, Moon Harbour, Frankie, Hartchef Discos, Tonimusic, SixoneSix, True to Form and Spontan Musik, in addition to the labels already associated with his early work.
