This Many Boyfriends are an indie pop group from Northern England. They form after a series of lineup changes and settle on a four-piece line-up made up of Richard Brooke on lead vocals, Tom on bass guitar, Laura on drums and Daniel on lead guitar. The group is later listed with Richard Brooke and Alex Wisgard as members.

Background and name

The band are named after a Beat Happening song. They begin with a shared interest in playing pop music at very high volume in small rooms. Their sound is often compared with Orange Juice, The Cribs, Hefner and The Smiths, while other influences include PJ Harvey, The Slits, Spearmint, Jonathan Richman, Otis Redding and Joy Division.

Style and releases

Richard Brooke writes a song about Paul Simon, reflecting his strong interest in Simon’s work. One of the group’s singles is titled I Should Be A Communist. They are associated with indie pop and alternative indie, and are described in connection with British guitar-pop traditions. Steve Lamacq of BBC 6 Music describes them as sounding like several people high on sugary cereal and bouncing down stairs on bright orange spacehoppers.
