There's More Of Us Than There Are Of You

There's More Of Us Than There Are Of You is a London-based band formed by Tom Goldsmith, who also plays in Circulus, and Adam Richens, formerly of High as Flames. The project begins as an experiment to blur the line between musician and non-musician, and between performer and audience, by gathering as many willing players as possible into one room with instruments and seeing what happens.

Line-up and sound

The band settles into a core line-up of eight members, with two guitars, bass, drums, synthesizers, violin, viola and glockenspiel, plus occasional vocals. Their music mixes improvisation with detailed arrangement, and is described as an organic lo-fi blend of prog, krautrock, afrobeat and jazz rock.

Early activity

The group plays only a handful of gigs at the start of its career, but the performances draw interest from both the band and audiences. The project begins with a chaotic, large-scale attempt at collective music-making before narrowing into a more focused ensemble where melody and structure take precedence.

Recording

At the point described, the band is recording at Hugo Danino's speaker palace on a large-format analogue tape machine.

Context

The band presents itself in the language of jazz while remaining outside jazz in any strict sense, and aims for audience dancing as much as instrumental interplay.
