Them The Sky

Them The Sky are a Brighton collective made up of close friends. The group develops its sound from a wide range of influences, including musique concrète, contemporary music, shoegaze and ambient, and combines these with elements such as classical-inspired melodies, layered ambience and driving drum patterns. Several members bring formal musical experience to the project, including classical guitar and advanced music technology studies, and the band uses a broad set of instruments and techniques in its music.

Formation and members

The project begins as housemates making music together and grows into a full live act with a strong visual element. The band consists of Adam Kay, Joey Curran, Ross Godon, Liam Ragless and Sim Kennedy.

Releases and performances

Them The Sky record their debut EP in the attic of their house, treating the space as a place for experimentation. The self-titled release is made available online and on CD. The group follows this with a second EP, Echolalia. Their live activity includes shows at The Green Door Store, The Hope, The Blind Tiger Club, Camden Proud Galleries and the NWfA Festival, as well as appearances at Meadowlands, Playgroup Festival, ArtNoise, SOURCE New Music and LOUT Brighton Rocks.

Recognition and collaborations

The band receives attention through support from The Argus, which names one of its downloads of the week, and through BBC Introducing, which plays the track “GSS”. They also support EXITMUSIC and The Fresh and Onlys for One-Inch Badge. In another project, They perform a sold-out audio-visual show at Brighton Dome for the Pop-Up Brighton “Soundscreen” event, alongside Phoria and Written in Waters, working with visual artists over a series of weeks to create the performance.

Style and context

Them The Sky sit within Brighton’s varied alternative scene and describe an ideal bill of The Postal Service supporting Sigur Rós. Their work combines a post-rock and alternative approach with ambient and shoegaze textures.
