Thee Faction

Thee Faction is a UK rock group from Reigate, known for socialist R&B with an explicit political agenda. The band forms in Reigate in the late 1970s, originally as a quartet of schoolmates: Billy Brentford, The Hard Man, Nylons and Dai Nasty. In the early 1980s, Dai Nasty’s cousin Baby Face, a teenage runaway from Wales, joins the group.

Political activity and live work

Thee Faction rejects the usual routes to commercial success, avoiding standard venues and the music press. Instead, it builds a following through squat gigs and benefit shows. Political activity and propaganda are central to the band’s work, and it presents music as part of a wider revolutionary project. Its songs act as a critique of capitalism and a call for workers’ unity, while Baby Face delivers spoken polemics between songs.

At its peak during the miners’ strike, the group draws audiences of two to three thousand people in reclaimed halls and other unusual venues. It also refuses to release records through corporate labels or give interviews to publications owned by private shareholders.

International activity and later line-up changes

In 1985, at the height of its influence in Britain, Thee Faction tours on the other side of the Iron Curtain, beginning in Poland and ending in the USSR. After that, it is not seen again in the UK. The band performs hundreds of shows across the Eastern Bloc, continuing into states that still support socialism after the fall of Stalinism.

At the turn of the 1990s in Yugoslavia, Thee Faction becomes a seven-piece. Billy Brentford and Baby Face, working on pirate radio in Belgrade, recruit two singers, Krystina-Prystina Engels and Kassandra Krossing. They become full members and add a soulful but aggressive backing-vocal style. The group later tours Moldova, Transnistria and other places before returning to Britain and focusing on political activity.

Legacy

Thee Faction is presented as a highly influential left-wing band in Britain between 1981 and 1985, with its name often placed near the top of lists of influential people on the left during that period. Its story also includes rumours of acting as a conduit between left opposition in the East and the UK, and suggestions that it defects, though the account does not confirm this.
