The Zutons

The Zutons are an indie rock band from Liverpool, United Kingdom, active between 2001 and 2009. Their line-up includes Dave McCabe on lead vocals and guitar, Abi Harding on saxophone and vocals, Russell Pritchard on bass and vocals, Sean Payne on drums, percussion and vocals, and Boyan Chowdhury on guitar until he leaves in 2007.

Style and background

The band’s music resists easy categorisation and is described as combining rock, pop, jazz, funk and other eclectic elements. It is also associated with alternative rock, blue-eyed soul, indie pop and pop rock. Their name comes from Zoot Horn Rollo, the nickname of Magic Band guitarist Bill Harkleroad.

Career and releases

The Zutons form in Liverpool in 2001 and share a strong local connection with other Liverpool bands. They are signed to Deltasonic and work with producer Ian Broudie, which leads to comparisons with The Coral. Their debut album, Who Killed the Zutons?, reaches number 9 in the UK album chart. The band releases three albums in total: Who Killed the Zutons? in 2004, Tired of Hanging Around in 2006, and You Can Do Anything in 2008.
