The Tunics

The Tunics are an indie rock group from Croydon who form in 2008 and emerge as teenagers. Their early material combines high-energy indie guitar riffs with lyrics that use wit and social observation, and they gain a reputation as a cult local band in Croydon. Their shows draw dancing and moshing crowds, and their early activity even leads to bans from one or two venues.

Releases and reception

Their debut single, “Cost of Living”, comes out in 2008 and attracts critical attention, including coverage from NME as well as bloggers and industry figures. The single also receives video playlist support in the UK through E4 and NME TV, and radio play on indie stations in Germany, Australia, the United States and Greece, which helps the group build a wider following beyond Croydon.

By 2010, The Tunics are preparing their second album with BMG, with release planned for February 2011. A later single, “Low”, is also set for release. The band’s later sound becomes fuller and more ethereal, while retaining the band’s prominent lyrics and the more serious tone shaped by touring and songwriting experience.

Touring and live work

The Tunics tour the UK and Europe for two years, sharing bills with Bombay Bicycle Club and Nada Surf. They also play at T in the Park, and this period of touring and experimentation contributes to a more controlled and mature sound.

The Tunics consist of Joe Costello on vocals and guitar, Scott Shepherd on bass guitar, James Booth on keys, and Simon Hargreaves on drums.
