The Tubes

The Tubes are an American rock group that form in Phoenix and remain active from 1972 to the present. They are associated with hard rock, proto-punk and rock, and are also linked with new wave and classic rock.

Overview

The band is known for theatre-oriented live shows that combine music with performance and costume. Their stage presentation includes elaborate outfits and theatrical effects, including acts in which they wear leotards painted with nipples and pubic hair. Their performances often satirise life in the United States, with material aimed at the media, consumerism and politics, and they are often banned in the Midwest of the United States.

Recordings and recognition

Their debut album, released in 1975, is self-titled and includes the single White Punks on Dope. In 1983 they score a top-10 U.S. hit with She’s a Beauty, and its video receives heavy play in the early years of MTV.

The Tubes continue to perform live, with several original members still in the touring line-up.
