The Time And Space Machine

The Time And Space Machine is the solo project of Richard Norris, a British musician and producer whose work draws on psychedelic rock, Balearic music, acid house and krautrock. Norris has long been influenced by the psychedelic era of 1967, having worked as label manager at the psych reissue label Bam Caruso. He later shares that interest with DJ and producer Erol Alkan, which leads to their remix and production partnership Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve.

Background

Norris is also associated with the Grid, the band responsible for the Balearic track “Floatation”, and with Jack The Tab, one of the early acid house and sample-based albums, which he releases in 1988. The Time And Space Machine grows out of these different strands in his career, bringing together his interest in psychedelic, Balearic and acid sounds.

Releases

The project issues The Time And Space Machine Volume One in 2008 and The Time And Space Machine Volume 2 in 2009, both on 5D. A mix album, Moondust, appears in 2009 on Heavenly/Virgin Records. The project also releases Set Phazer To Stun in 2010 on Tirk Recordings.

Collaborations and remixes

Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve, Norris and Alkan, releases four mini-albums and one CD, and also records a remix album. The duo remixes artists including Midlake, the Chemical Brothers, Franz Ferdinand, Simian Mobile Disco and Tracey Thorn. Under The Time And Space Machine name, Norris also works on remixes for A Mountain Of One, City Reverb, Woolfy Vs Projections, Yellow Moon Band, Van She and The Mummers.

Style and live activity

The Time And Space Machine is described as combining psychedelic, cosmic, acid folk, Balearic and krautrock elements. The project is presented with a full band and with live audiovisual work developed alongside filmmaker Kieran Evans.
