The Sweet Vandals
The Sweet Vandals are a Spanish funk and soul group active since 2005. Their sound sits in funk, soul, jazz, deep funk and modern funk, with an emphasis on a raw, live-feeling recording style.
Style and approach
The group focuses on what it presents as a direct, “real” sound, shaped by a strong interest in soul and funk bands. It is associated with the same broad field as artists such as Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators and The New Mastersounds, while also aiming for a different approach of its own. One notable part of its recording method is that it does not use horn sections, instead aiming to capture on record the same sound it produces on stage.
Early release
After five months, the group issues its first 7-inch single, I Got You, Man!, on Funkorama Records. The track becomes a classic in its scene and receives strong support from DJ and selector Keb Darge, who gives it heavy rotation on his Deep Funk Session in London.
