The Stowaways

The Stowaways are a German group from Köln, and are no longer active. The name has been used by several different acts, including a London four-piece indie, rock and pop band, but the group identified here is the garage band formed by Tim Tatum on lead vocals, Ken Knight on bass guitar, Tommy O’Neal on lead guitar, Paul Quick on rhythm guitar and Ken Tanner on drums.

Band and sound

The Stowaways play garage rock, with a sound that also crosses into folk rock, punk and beat-influenced rock. Their music combines vocal and instrumental hooks with a mix of harder-edged songs and more atmospheric material. The group is described as versatile, with comparisons to The Rolling Stones, The Beau Brummels and The Byrds at different points in its work.

Release

Their sole album, In Our Time on Justice Records, is noted as one of the rarer LPs on the label and one of its stronger releases. The record includes versions of songs by The Tams, Bobby Hebb, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Byrds, alongside the original track “Just a Toy”.
