The Starlets are an early 1960s Chicago girl group. Barbara Allbut is the named member in the available record. The group is active from 1961 to 1965.

Background

The Starlets are identified as a soul and R&B act from Chicago, Illinois. They record for Pam Records and release singles including “Better Tell Him No” and “My Last Cry”.

Recording history and associated material

They also record “I Sold My Heart To The Junkman”, a song originally by The Basin Street Boys from 1946. The track is later issued by Newtown under the name of Patti LaBelle’s group, The Blue Belles, where it becomes a hit and leads to a legal case. After Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles are caught lip-synching on American Bandstand, The Starlets sue and each member receives $5,000 in damages.
