The Riverboat Gamblers

The Riverboat Gamblers are a US punk rock band from Denton and Austin, Texas. The group forms in 1997 and remains active, with a lineup that includes Patrick Lillard, Ian MacDougall, Ian Walling and Mike Wiebe. Over time, the band also includes Fadi el-Assad and Rob Marchant. It is associated with punk, punk rock, alternative rock and pop punk.

Formation and early years

The band begins in Denton, Texas, when former Blanks member Pat Lillard, known as Spider, forms the group with Fadi el-Assad, also called Freddy Castro, on lead guitar, and Mike Wiebe, known as Teko Buller or Rookie Sensation, on vocals. Lillard aims to make music in the spirit of Virginia punk band The Candy Snatchers. The Riverboat Gamblers first build a following through house parties and shows around Denton and the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Their early live identity centres on drinking, gambling and a deliberately wry approach that contrasts with the emo scene of the time. Their first show features songs with those themes, establishing the tone of the band’s early material.

Releases and recordings

The band draws wider attention in September 2001 with the self-released 7-inch single Jenna Is A No Show. Its 2001 self-titled release and 2003 album Something to Crow About are both produced by Texas punk musician Tim Kerr, known for his work with Big Boys and Lord High Fixers. After the response to Something to Crow About, the band relocates from Denton to Austin.

The Riverboat Gamblers sign first with Gearhead Records and later with Volcom Entertainment. Their album To the Confusion of Our Enemies appears in 2006.

Live profile and wider recognition

The band gains wider notice after an energetic showcase at South by Southwest in Austin in 2003. In 2005 it appears on the Warped Tour and becomes known for intense live performances. Its later writing moves beyond the playful tone of the early songs toward broader material about life in the United States.

Media appearances

The Riverboat Gamblers also appear on video game soundtracks, including Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, Madden NFL 07, FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage and Sega GT Online 2.
