The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes are a Copenhagen, Denmark-based duo formed in 2001. The group consists of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo, and is active from 2000 to the present. It is associated with indie rock, garage rock, noise pop, post-punk revival, alternative and shoegaze.

Formation and members

Sune Rose Wagner plays guitar, other instruments and vocals, while Sharin Foo plays guitar and sings. Wagner was previously a member of Psyched Up Janis. The band name combines a reference to the Ronettes with Buddy Holly’s song “Rave On!”.

Sound and influences

The Raveonettes use close two-part vocal harmonies influenced by the Everly Brothers, together with hard-edged electric guitar, layers of noise, driving rhythms and often darker lyrics. Their songs draw on the structural and chordal simplicity of 1950s and 1960s rock, and their sound is described as resembling a more melodic version of The Jesus and Mary Chain, with influence from The Velvet Underground.

Albums

The band releases the studio album Raven in the Grave through Vice Records. It is the group’s fifth studio album. The record is described as omitting the group’s usual surf drumbeat and adopting a darker tone.
