The Prototypes are a UK drum and bass and electronic group formed in Brighton, England, in the late 2000s. The project begins as a duo made up of Nick White and Chris Garvey, and it remains active from 2007 to the present. Garvey later steps back from the project and continues as Circadian, while White remains part of the act.

Background

The Prototypes start out in Brighton and build their early profile through singles released on labels including Formation Records and Viper Recordings. They later sign to Shogun Audio for a period between 2011 and 2013 before moving to an exclusive deal with Viper Recordings in 2014. Their releases include a number of EPs, alongside original tracks and remixes.

Releases and recognition

One of their key singles, “Pale Blue Dot”, becomes Beatport’s second top-selling drum and bass track of the year and is nominated for Best Track at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards. The group also receives nominations for Best Producer, Best Music Video and Best DJ at the same awards. Another promo single, “Pop It Off”, is described by UKF Music as one of the most unifying drum and bass tracks of its year.

Their debut album, City of Gold, is released in 2015 and reaches No. 22 on the UK Dance Chart in the week of release. The album features vocals from artists including Ayah Marar and Amy Pearson.

Live work and collaborations

The Prototypes support City of Gold with an international tour and appear at festivals including Urban Art Forms, Tomorrowland and Nocturnal Festival. They also receive radio and live PA support from DJs such as Matrix & Futurebound. Alongside their own productions, they release remixes for artists including Avicii, Ed Sheeran, Bingo Players, Hadouken!, Modestep and AlunaGeorge.
