The Poisoned Glass

The Poisoned Glass is a collaboration between George Stuart Dahlquist and Edgy 59, two former members of Burning Witch. After Burning Witch ends in 1998, the pair go their separate ways but remain in contact and occasionally discuss working together until the project feels natural.

Formation and sound

The project begins with a song called “Silent Vigil”, based on a twelve-tone progression that Dahlquist originally intends as a tonal bass solo. After he experiments with it, he finds the result heavier, more despondent and less forgiving than his other work, and sends a rough mix to Edgy 59, who recognises it as a strong match between their two approaches. The duo then form The Poisoned Glass and begin recording under that name.

Although the instrumentation appears limited, the music is not minimalist. It is described as bleak and tonally dense, with a sound that is warm but airless and tightly enclosed. The project fits within drone, doom metal, drone doom and related doom styles.
