The Patrick James Pearson Band
The Patrick James Pearson Band is a Plymouth-based alternative rock group that mixes elements of garage rock, indie, punk and proto-punk. It is described as a cross between At The Drive In and Ben Folds Five, and its early recordings help establish its profile in the UK live circuit.
Early releases and BBC exposure
The band’s first EP, The American Lover EP, attracts attention and leads to selection for the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury. It performs on the Friday of the festival, and the response includes strong support from Tom Robinson. The band becomes the number one most-shared act on the BBC Glastonbury website homepage for around 24 hours. The song Reasons To Move On is also chosen by the BBC at Glastonbury for broadcast on Lauren Laverne’s 6 Music show and on BBC Three’s festival roundup programme.
DIY recording and releases
The band follows a strong do-it-yourself approach, handling much of its own work independently. Its second EP, Reasons To Move On, contains five tracks and is released on the band’s own OUF Recordings label. The recordings are made in bedrooms in Plymouth, including the drums, and the band also produces its own sleeves, videos, websites and tours. Singer Patrick James Pearson funds this work in part through his job teaching music in primary schools.
Live work and production
Patrick James Pearson also runs the Plymouth club night Ouf. In late 2011 the band tours nationally as support to Hard-Fi. The following year it works with producer Pete Miles, who is known for work with King Blues and Crazy Arm, on the five-track EP Discipline.
