The Lemonheads

The Lemonheads are an alternative rock band from Boston, United States, formed in 1984. The group starts as an underground punk rock act and remains active, with a history of frequent lineup changes around Evan Dando, who is the only consistent member.

History and style

The band develops from punk into alternative rock and related styles, including indie rock, jangle pop, pop punk, power pop and punk. It is based in New York City later in its career, but its origin is Boston. The Lemonheads are described as one of the important alternative rock groups.

Key releases and songs

The band’s popularity grows during the 1990s with the album It's a Shame About Ray, released in 1992. That album is produced, engineered and mixed by The Robb Brothers: Bruce Robb, Dee Robb and Joe Robb. It is followed by a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson”, which becomes one of the band’s most successful singles.

Members and lineups

Across its various incarnations, The Lemonheads includes co-founders Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz, as well as John Strohm, Doug Trachten, Corey Loog Brennan, Byron Hoag, Ben Daughtry, Juliana Hatfield, Nic Dalton, Dave Ryan, Patrick “Murph” Murphy, Bill Gibson, Mark “Budola” Newman, Kenny Lyon, Vess Ruhtenberg, Devon Ashley, Karl Alvarez, Bill Stevenson and P. David Hazel. Lineups also include players associated with Blake Babies, Godstar, Sneeze, The Plunderers, Dinosaur Jr, Eastern Dark and Descendents.

Breaks and later activity

The band is active until 1997, then goes on hiatus. It reforms with a new lineup in 2005 and releases The Lemonheads the following year.
