The Journeymen
The Journeymen are a Los Angeles group. In the early 1960s, they form around James Bladon, Jeremy Carter, Matt Gourley and Mark McConville.
Overview
The name has also been associated with an earlier folk trio active in the first half of the 1960s: John Phillips, Scott McKenzie and Dick Weismann. In that line-up, Phillips and McKenzie are boyhood friends and have already worked together before meeting Weismann in early 1961, when the group forms. After club dates in Greenwich Village, they sign to Capitol Records and record three albums for the label. The group splits in early 1964 after internal difficulties.
After the split
Following the break-up, John Phillips tours with an act called the New Journeymen before later forming the Mamas & the Papas with his wife Michelle. Scott McKenzie later has a major hit with “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)”. Dick Weismann continues recording and writes a history of folk music titled Which side are you on.
