The Hives
The Hives are a Swedish rock band from Fagersta, active since 1993. They gain recognition in Sweden during the 1990s and reach international success in the early 2000s as part of the garage rock revival. Their sound is associated with alternative rock, garage punk, garage rock, garage rock revival, indie rock and post-punk revival.
Line-up
The band’s core lineup includes Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist on vocals, Nicholaus Arson on lead guitar and backing vocals, Vigilante Carlstroem on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Dr. Matt Destruction on bass, Chris Dangerous on drums and Johan Gustafsson. The group is also linked with Randy Fitzsimmons.
Releases and recognition
The Hives release six studio albums: Barely Legal, Veni Vidi Vicious, Tyrannosaurus Hives, The Black and White Album, Lex Hives and The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons. Their discography also includes the compilation Your New Favourite Band, the live DVD Tussles in Brussels and the live album Live at Third Man Records.
Their commercial breakthrough comes with Veni Vidi Vicious, especially the single “Hate to Say I Told You So”, which becomes closely associated with the band.
Performance style
The Hives are known for coordinated black-and-white stage clothing and energetic live performances. Their shows receive attention from critics and audiences.
