The Hazey Janes
The Hazey Janes are a group from Dundee, United Kingdom, active from 2000. They form a quartet made up of Liam Brennan on drums and backing vocals, Alice Marra on vocals and acoustic guitar, Matthew Marra on bass, and Andrew Mitchell on lead vocals and guitar.
The band forms in Dundee in 1999 and builds its sound around a blend of traditional folk, country rock and American power-pop, with comparisons to Big Star and Velvet Crush in the available description. Their songwriting and live performance are marked by three-part harmonies and by the vocal partnership of Alice and Matthew Marra, both of whom have strong musical backgrounds. The group is described as playing with energy and uplift, and as having a musical maturity that comes through in both performance and studio work.
The Hazey Janes tour extensively across the UK and appear both as headliners and in support of other acts, including Snow Patrol and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. Festival and event appearances include The Ullapool Festival, The Wickerman Festival, T in the Park, Glasgow's Hogmanay celebration, Musicworks, Celtic Connections, and a home-town Christmas Festival performance in front of a large crowd. They also appear at South by Southwest in Austin in 2006 and support Snow Patrol at Edinburgh's Meadowbank Stadium for the T On The Fringe festival.
Their first release is a self-titled mini-album on Measured Records, issued in October 2004. Their debut full-length album, Hotel Radio, is recorded in Spain and released in 2006. Singles from the album include “Your Enemy”, “Always There” and “Fire In The Sky”, with the first two entering the UK Top 20 Indie Singles chart and gaining airplay on BBC 6Music, Radio 2 and XFM.
