The Haden Triplets

The Haden Triplets are a vocal group from Los Angeles made up of sisters Petra Haden, Rachel Haden and Tanya Haden. They come from a musical family: they are the triplet daughters of jazz double-bassist Charlie Haden, and they grow up around a wide range of music at home, including Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Keith Jarrett and Ornette Coleman. They also spend time with their father’s family in Springfield, Missouri, where they learn old country songs associated with the Haden Family, and they hear old Yiddish songs from their mother’s side of the family.

Recording history

In 2014, the trio releases its first vocal album, The Haden Triplets. The record is produced by Ry Cooder and issued on Jack White’s Third Man Records. It focuses on stripped-back older country material, including songs associated with the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Webb Pierce, Kitty Wells and the Louvin Brothers. The group begins assembling the album after meeting Ry Cooder through his son Joachim, and after Cooder hears them sing Bill Monroe’s “Voice From On High”, he suggests recording an album.

Other work and collaborations

Separately and together, Petra, Rachel and Tanya Haden contribute to recordings and performances by the Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer, Beck, Green Day, Todd Rundgren, the Rentals and Silversun Pickups. Petra Haden and Rachel Haden are former members of That Dog. The three sisters also perform together as The Fates in Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown.

Live performance

The group performs together at Charlie Haden’s memorial concert at New York City’s Town Hall on 13 January 2015.
