The Garifuna Collective

The Garifuna Collective is a punta group from Hopkins, Belize. It first comes together for the 2007 album Wátina, credited to Andy Palacio & The Garifuna Collective, and it continues after Palacio’s death under the direction of producer Ivan Duran.

Background and style

The group draws on the Garifuna music scene of Belize and performs songs shaped by Garifuna Afro-Amerindian cultural heritage. Its repertoire sits within punta, a Garifuna-associated style, and it is identified as a Belizean punta ensemble.
