The Garden
The Garden is an American duo from Orange County, California, active since 2011. The group consists of twin brothers Wyatt Shears and Fletcher Shears, and it releases music on the Vada Vada label. Its sound sits across alternative rock, art punk, electronic, experimental rock, indie rock and post-punk.
Formation and style
Formed in 2011, The Garden builds its music around fast, punk-influenced bass-and-drum arrangements. The duo is also associated with a distinctive image, with music and presentation shaped by DIY principles and thrift store-cum-glam fashion. The brothers describe their approach as “vada vada”, a term they use for pure creative expression outside fixed genres and established ideals.
Releases
Their debut album, The Life and Times of a Paperclip, appears in 2013. Several smaller releases follow, before the group signs to Epitaph Records and issues the album Haha in 2015, alongside the lead single “All Smiles Over Here :)”. Their third album, Mirror Might Steal Your Charm, appears in 2018, followed by Kiss My Super Bowl Ring in 2020 and Horseshit on Route 66 in 2022.
