The Fold

The Fold is an American indie rock band from Chicago, active since 2002. The group forms around frontman and founder Daniel Castady, with Aaron Green on guitar, Keith Mochel on bass and Mark Rhoades on drums. Its members come from earlier Chicago rock acts, including Showoff, a Warner Brothers-signed band.

Background and formation

The Fold emerges from a series of Chicago-based rock projects and forms after Castady leaves a major-label band to start a new group. The band’s early history is shaped by those earlier experiences, which give it a more settled and focused approach to songwriting and performance.

Sound and recording

The band describes its songs as built from the simplest elements first, with each track initially recorded as an acoustic guitar and vocal demo before any further production. Its listed genres include alternative rock, indie rock and pop punk, and it is also associated with Christian rock and Christian music.

Album and label work

In 2005, The Fold travels to New York City to begin recording its Tooth & Nail Records debut, This Too Shall Pass, with producer Steven Haigler, who has worked with Brand New and The Pixies. The album is later completed across the country in Seattle with producer Zach Hodges, who has worked with Terminal and Dead Poetic. The record is presented as a collection shaped by Castady’s recent personal experiences and by themes of hope and resilience.
