The Fireworks

The Fireworks are an indie pop group from London, United Kingdom, active since 2011. The current line-up includes Isabel Albiol, Beth Arzy, Shaun Charman and Matthew Rimell. The band forms around Matthew’s songs, which first circulate privately by phone before the project becomes a full group.

Formation and early activity

The Fireworks begin in 2011, initially as a secret project. Matthew shares his songs with friends over the phone, and those friends persuade him to make a proper band. Close friends are then brought in, and the group starts playing live soon afterwards. Early shows include Indietracks, Indiepop Days Berlin and the Nottingham Indiepop Alldayer, and the band also records its first session for Dandelion Radio.

Recordings and releases

In 2012 the band records the four-track The Fireworks EP, with the songs “Higher and Higher”, “All The Things That You Said”, “Surprise Me” and “One Way Traffic”. Carys leaves after recording the single, and Shaun Charman later joins on drums. The debut four-track 7-inch EP is released on Shelflife.

Sound and influences

The Fireworks are described as playing fuzz pop and indie pop with feedback, chiming guitars, strong drums and bass, and matched vocals. Their sound draws on the style of 1980s bands such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Shop Assistants, My Bloody Valentine and Razorcuts, while also being linked with acts including Henry’s Dress, The Pastels, The Field Mice, The Flatmates and The Frenchmen.

Line-up notes

Across the band’s early history, members and collaborators include Emma, Isabel, Carys and Shaun. Shaun Charman is identified with The Wedding Present and The Popguns. The Fireworks remain active as a London-based group.
