The Dunwells

The Dunwells are an indie rock and pop rock group from Leeds, United Kingdom. Formed in 2009, the band is active from 2009 to the present and is built around brothers Joseph Dunwell and David Dunwell, together with Adam Taylor, Jonny Lamb and Dave Hanson.

Background and lineup

The group begins in Leeds and draws on a mix of acoustic instrumentation and electronics, alongside direct songwriting and large chorus-driven arrangements. In its earlier line-up, the band includes Joseph Dunwell on vocals, David Dunwell on guitar and vocals, Adam Taylor on drums and vocals, and Rob Clayton on bass and vocals. Joseph and David grow up in a musical household, with early influences including their father’s Bob Dylan and Beatles records and their mother singing Motown songs. Rob Clayton is David’s childhood friend, and Joseph meets Adam at college, where they bond over their shared interest in music. The band’s later listed membership includes Dave Hanson, Jonny Lamb, David Dunwell, Joseph Dunwell and Adam Taylor.

Releases and songwriting

The Dunwells release the EP Lucky Ones and the 2013 debut album Blind Sighted Faith. Their songwriting develops through years of school-era collaboration and extensive touring in the UK and the United States. The EP title track is mixed by Manny Marroquin, while the band works with producer Stephen Harris and songwriters Blair MacKichan and James Flannigan on material associated with the EP.

Performances and profile

The group tours widely in support of Blind Sighted Faith and performs at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Festival and the Bonnaroo Festival, alongside an appearance on Late Night with Jay Leno. They also play sold-out shows across the UK. Their work is described through a strong local identity, with production and writing that reflect their Leeds background.
