The Doldrums
The Doldrums is a Tulsa, Oklahoma group centred on Dylan Golden Aycock and Mark Kuykendall. The project works with experimental forms built from pedal steel guitar and dobro, along with field recordings, old records and found sound. Its pieces are described as improvisational and experimentally constructed, and the act is associated with electronic, punk, experimental and rock n roll contexts.
Background and activity
The Doldrums forms in Tulsa, and Aycock is the main figure named in connection with the project. In 2008, members of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey join The Doldrums for a live performance. Aycock also performs pedal steel with the ambient rock band Mar, based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Related projects and releases
Under the alias Talk West, Aycock releases a tape of improvised pedal steel tracks titled Ahava on Digitalis Industries in 2010. The Doldrums also issues material through the UK electronic label Make Mine Music and through Tulsa-based Organum Records and Scissor Tail Editions.
Teaching and wider work
Aycock also teaches sound art and field recording through Living Arts Gallery.
