The Districts

The Districts are an American indie rock group from Lititz, Pennsylvania. They form in 2009, when the original members Rob Grote, Mark Larson, Connor Jacobus and Braden Lawrence are still in high school. Their sound combines indie rock with folk rock, alternative rock and garage rock, with touches of jangly Americana, blues-influenced rock and acoustic material.

Releases and early development

The band’s first release is the EP Kitchen Songs, which appears in 2011. Its debut full-length album, Telephone, follows the next year. A second EP, While You Were in Honesdale, comes out in late 2012 and leans more towards acoustic arrangements. The group continues to perform regionally during this period.

Recordings and label work

The Districts attract the attention of Fat Possum Records, which signs them in 2013. In January 2014, the label releases the band’s self-titled third EP, which includes three remastered songs from Telephone and two newly recorded tracks. Their second album, A Flourish and a Spoil, follows a little more than a year later and is produced by John Congleton.

Line-up changes

The Districts later record A Flourish and a Spoil with guitarist Pat Cassidy in the band, after Mark Larson leaves to go to college. Braden Lawrence remains a member of the group.
