The Disciples
The Disciples are a UK dub and roots reggae group active since 1986. The act begins as brothers Russ and Lol, working on music for the sound system figure Jah Shaka, who also gives the group its name. The Disciples record four albums for Shaka between 1987 and 1991.
History and development
Russ D. is the main producer, musician and engineer behind the project. After the early work with Jah Shaka, Russ later forms two labels: Boom Shacka Lacka, used for UK dub styles, and Backyard Movements, used for roots vocal material. In 1991 the group builds its own sound system and runs it for five years before putting it away. Lol later leaves music, while Russ continues with studio work, productions and DJ performances, often alongside long-time friend and micman Jonah Dan.
Recordings and collaborations
Russ D. works with a wide range of singers and artists, including Sister Rasheda, Rootsman & Dayjah, Delroy Dyer, Creation Stepper, Candyman, Wayne McArthur, Prince Allah, Prince Malachi, Mykal Rose, Color Red, Lutan Fyah, Ras Macbean, Christine Miller, Bunny Lie Lie, Danny Vibes, Tenastillin, Tony Roots, African Simba, Sis Nya Azania, Avaran and Murreyman. He also produces and remixes for Inner Sanctuary, Alpha & Omega, Jah Tubby’s, Twilight Circus, Cultural Warriors, Jah Warrior, Universal Roots, Roots Hytek and VI Connection, among others.
