The Crimea
The Crimea are a rock and indie group from Camden, United Kingdom, active from 2002 to 2013. The band is led by Davey MacManus and includes former members of The Crocketts. Their early line-up and background connect England, Ireland, Wales and Zimbabwe.
Early break and live profile
One of the group’s first significant breaks comes when Davey MacManus spots Fran Healy of Travis and passes him a demo. A week later, The Crimea open for Travis at Brixton Academy. They also build a live reputation through support slots with Ash, Kings of Leon, Billy Corgan, Stereophonics and Jimmy Eat World, and by appearing on the Carling stage at Reading and Leeds alongside Arctic Monkeys.
Recordings and releases
The Crimea release the single “Baby Boom”, which places at number 8 in John Peel’s festive 50. Their album Tragedy Rocks follows after a run of UK tours. Later singles “Lottery Winners On Acid” and “White Russian Galaxy” receive airplay on MTV2. In 2007, they release Secrets of the Witching Hour as a free download.
Reception and style
The band are associated with indie and alternative rock, and their live shows draw attention for the crowd-led antics of Davey MacManus and the use of a “satanic bubble machine”.
