The Choir
The Choir is an American Christian alternative rock band that begins in Southern California in the early 1980s and remains active. The group is originally known as The Youth Choir. Its core lineup centres on Derri Daugherty on guitar and vocals, Steve Hindalong on drums and lyrics, and Dan Michaels on lyricon, electric flute and saxophone. Other members include Mike Sauerbrey, Robin Spurs, Marc Byrd and Tim Chandler.
History
The band moves to the Nashville, Tennessee area in the 1990s. Daugherty and Hindalong remain closely associated with the group’s identity, with Hindalong writing most of the lyrics. The Choir’s sound is described as atmospheric alternative Christian rock, and it is also tagged as alternative rock, garage rock, psychedelic and 60s.
Related work and members
Several members have outside projects and wider credits. Daugherty is also a member of The Lost Dogs, which starts in 1991. Hindalong produces four City On A Hill albums and co-writes “God of Wonders” with Marc Byrd. Byrd also plays in Common Children, records with Christine Glass as Glassbyrd, and is part of Hammock. Michaels works as a Senior Vice President at Fair Trade Services, formerly INO Records, from 2000. Tim Chandler plays bass for Daniel Amos and The Swirling Eddies and dies in 2018.
