The Breakers

The Breakers are a rock band from Denmark, active from 2002 to 2013, with Anders Bruus, Mikkel Hald, Jackie Larsen and Toke Nistead in the line-up. They play in a style associated with garage rock, surf rock, surf and rockabilly, with a sound that draws on 1960s rock and roll and soul influences.

Recording and releases

In spring 2010, the band records its third album and its first for Wicked Cool in New York City with Little Steven. He produces the self-titled album and co-writes several songs, while Bob Clearmountain mixes it. The band’s approach is described as a blend of Stax-style rhythm, Rolling Stones-influenced guitars and soulful vocals, with references to the Rolling Stones, Small Faces and Yardbirds as touchstones.

The first single, “Riot Act”, comes out as a digital single and on 7-inch vinyl in autumn 2010. “Jerry Lee Symptoms” follows as the second single, and both tracks are selected as “Coolest Song Of The Week” on Underground Garage, a syndicated radio show. A third single, “If You Please”, is also issued from the album.

Style and context

The Breakers are identified with dance-oriented rock and roll that takes cues from Motown, Memphis and Muscle Shoals soul as well as British and American 1960s rock bands. The name also appears among several other acts with the same title, but the Danish group is the one associated with these recordings and releases.
