The Black Hats
The Black Hats are an Oxford band consisting of Ian Budd on bass and vocals, Nick Breakspear on guitar and vocals, and Mark Franklin on drums and vocals. They build a live reputation on the Oxford music scene and are associated with a 21st-century alt-rock sound.
Releases
In 2012, the band releases its debut EP, Austerity for the Hoi Polloi, which is produced by Sam Williams, known for work with Plan B and Supergrass. The release receives attention from online music sites including Muzu.tv, Stereoboard and Red Hot Velvet, and from local press such as the Oxford Mail and Ocelot Magazine. A follow-up EP is also planned.
Live activity
The Black Hats play high-profile shows at Truck Festival and Gathering Festival, and support Dodgy and Spector. Their profile is also helped by support from BBC Introducing Oxfordshire and BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson. Nightshift Magazine describes them as ahead of the current crop, and Truck Festival compares their music to Blood Red Shoes, Interpol and The Young Knives.
