The Balconies

The Balconies are a Canadian group formed in 2008, based between Ottawa and Toronto, and active since then. The line-up includes Jacquie Neville, Stephen Neville and Liam Jaeger. The band begins in Ottawa, where the Neville siblings and Jaeger play together after meeting through university classical music studies, before moving to Toronto as their live following grows.

Style and performance

The Balconies combine indie rock, new wave and post-punk energy with classical theory and pop structure. Their music is described through driving guitar, bass and drums, with Jacquie Neville on vocals and guitar, Stephen Neville on bass, and Liam Jaeger providing rhythmic support. Their sound is marked by strong vocal parts, prominent bass lines and a loud, forceful stage presence.

Career and live activity

After starting out in Ottawa bars, the band relocates to Toronto and develops a following through extensive live work. They record an early self-released issue before playing shows and festivals across Canada. Their live history includes appearances with Cold War Kids, Juliette Lewis, Melissa Auf der Maur, Mother Mother, Land of Talk and Sloan, and performances at Ottawa Bluesfest, North by Northeast, Canadian Music Fest, WESTFEST and Pop Montreal.

Recording work

The Balconies work with producer Jon Drew, known for work with Tokyo Police Club and Fucked Up, on their first full-length release. They also issue a seven-inch release with two tracks recorded by Drew. Their recorded work reflects the same mix of classical training and rock performance that shapes their live shows.
