The Auteur

The Auteur are a Brighton group formed in October 2007. Their line-up consists of Alex Rumble on vocals and guitar, Julian Bowen on drums and samples, Kerry Williams on bass and vocals, and Kevin Deverick on guitar. They play electro-tinged power pop and build their sound around polished production and a live set that they develop while touring.

Early development

In 2008, the band focus on refining their material, growing a fanbase and tightening their performances. They issue a four-track recording called 2007 Demos, which sells out in several pressings. Before releasing a debut single, they complete three full UK tours.

Recordings and releases

Their music includes the single B-side To Cut A Short Story Shorter, which appears on their MySpace profile and attracts 7,000 plays in its first 24 hours online. Their debut single is Hey Watch This!, taken from a five-song EP.

Label and touring

The Auteur sign to Manchester-based independent label LAB Records in June 2008, after an eleven-date run with label artists MiMi Soya and Lost On Campus. By the end of the year, they play sold-out shows with Attack! Attack! and Lights & Sounds.

Style and profile

The band present themselves as a British counterpart to American acts in the power pop scene, and their online profile helps generate attention around their blend of English-leaning pop and electronic elements.
