The Apples

The Apples are an Israeli funk and jazz group formed in 2002. The group develops from a mix of electronic production, live sampling, organic effects and a jazz-based horn front line, and its music is associated with funk, acid jazz and jazz-funk.

Formation and style

The band begins in Israel with the core of the electronic artists Schoolmaster and Mixmonster, together with the rhythm section of Shai Ran and Yoni Halevy. Its early performances are long, improvised sets built around spontaneous compositions, with the material later taking shape through regular performances in small clubs, outdoor festivals and dancehalls. The group’s approach centres on a funk foundation with improvising horns and a strong emphasis on live interaction.

Releases and recognition

The first album, MITZ, is a compilation of material recorded in a single session in one room. It sells out its first three editions and draws attention within the music scene, influencing other groups interested in an organic, electro-acoustic sound. The follow-up, Attention!, develops the band’s sound further into old-school funk, soul jazz, aggressive horn lines, wider turntable use and Middle Eastern rhythms.

Line-up

The listed members are Oleg Nayman, ירון אוזנה and Uri Wertheim. Earlier line-ups also include Arthur Krasnobaev, Yaron Ouzana, Yuval Tabachnik, Shai Ran, Yoni Halevy, DJ Todres, Schoolmaster and MixMonster, with roles covering trumpet, trombone, saxophones, acoustic bass, drums, turntables, sound console and live effects.

Broadcast and wider use

The Apples’ music receives radio play and appears on music television programmes and in commercials. The band also performs material that keeps changing from show to show, responding to both each other and the audience.
