Tenacious D

Tenacious D is an American comedy rock group from Los Angeles, California, active since 1994. It is led by Jack Black and Kyle Gass, who form the core of the act and are known for mixing rock music with satirical, absurdist comedy. The band is also referred to as “The D” and has been introduced as “The Greatest Band in the world. Period.”

Formation and early work

Black and Gass meet in Edinburgh, Scotland, during the Edinburgh Fringe in 1989, when they are both members of the Los Angeles theatre troupe The Actors’ Gang. They later form Tenacious D in Los Angeles. Their first live show takes place in 1994 at Al’s Bar, where the audience chooses the name Tenacious D. The name comes from a phrase used by sports commentator Marv Albert about the tenacious defence of the New York Knicks. Other proposed names include Pets or Meat, Balboa’s Biblical Theatre and The Axe Lords Featuring Gorgazon’s Mischief.

Before the group develops its own material, Black and Gass perform covers of Bobby McFerrin songs. Gass teaches Black to play guitar, while Black helps Gass with acting.

Television and wider recognition

The band gains a wider reputation in 1999 through a self-titled HBO television series produced with David Cross and Bob Odenkirk. The series includes three half-hour shows made from six short segments, with titles including The Search for Inspirado, Angel in Disguise, Death of a Dream, The Greatest Song in the World, The Fan and Road Gig. Some songs later used on the debut album first appear in the series, alongside other songs that remain unreleased. The show leads the band toward making a film rather than continuing the television format.

After the series, Tenacious D continue to perform and become support acts for major artists including Beck, Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters. At a show at the Viper Room in Los Angeles, they meet Dave Grohl, who later appears with them in the Foo Fighters video for Learn to Fly.

Music and style

Tenacious D’s music combines hard rock and acoustic rock with comedy, parody and theatrical performance. Their songs often play on heavy metal clichés and rock mythology, while also focusing on sex, friendship, cannabis use and the duo’s own exaggerated sense of musicianship and sexual prowess. Black is known for his theatrical singing style, while Gass is associated with acoustic guitar playing.

The band’s sound has been described as mock rock. Their debut album includes humorous sketches as well as songs. Critics also compare the storytelling style of some lyrics to rock opera. The band uses deliberate backmasking on Karaté, and its imagery often centres on evil and Satanic symbolism.

Recordings, film and collaborations

Dave Grohl performs drumming on both of the band’s albums and provides the voice of the devil on Beelzeboss; he also appears as Satan in Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. Grohl’s connection with the group extends from the Foo Fighters video appearance to these later recordings and film work.

Tenacious D later star in their own film, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. The group also contributes backing vocals to Styx’s Kiss Your Ass Goodbye, which appears on the 2003 album Cyclorama.

Influences and related appearances

Black names ABBA, Dio, Black Sabbath, Meat Loaf and Bobby McFerrin among his influences. Gass points to Led Zeppelin as part of the group’s musical background, and also names Tom Waits, Tony Hawk and Tony Robbins. The song Tribute grows out of a failed attempt to write a song better than Metallica’s One, which Black plays for Gass and describes as the best song in the world.

Tenacious D appears in Guitar Hero III, with The Metal featured in the trailer shown at E3 2007, and the band is included in Rock Band 2 with Master Exploder. Jack Black also appears as roadie Eddie Riggs in the video game Brütal Legend.
