Syd Bozko

Syd Bozko is a Manchester-area indie rock band formed by David Cunningham. After Cunningham had played in a previous band as a teenager, he starts building the group again with help from his younger brother, who plays bass. Mark Barlow joins in 2006, and Paul Cunningham later becomes an official member. The line-up comes together in August 2007, when the band records its first demo CD and begins playing live shows.

Style and early activity

The band describes its approach as having no single set influence, saying only that it aims to make good music. Its sound is described as indie rock with a catchy edge. The group develops around Manchester and plays local venues, building a reputation through live shows and radio play.

Recognition

Syd Bozko wins the YGG Unsigned 2008 event at the Manchester Irish Festival. The organiser, James Hennigan, praises the band’s live performance and ability to work a crowd. A review from Glasswerks National at Hide & Seek Festival also singles the band out as one to watch. The band later gets airplay on XFM Manchester with Clint Boon and performs in top Manchester venues.
