Syd Arthur
Syd Arthur are a psychedelic rock band from Canterbury, England, active since 2003. They work within the Canterbury scene and draw on the city’s tradition of psychedelic and progressive rock, especially its improvisational approach.
Formation and name
The group win the Canterbury Best Local Band competition before adopting the name Syd Arthur. The name combines references to Syd Barrett and to the Kinks album Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire).
Sound and style
Their music is described by the band as “psychedelic funk rock”. It also includes elements of folk, world music, jazz and dance rhythms, alongside psychedelic and progressive rock influences.
Recording and releases
In 2009 the band create their own recording space, Wicker Studios, and they release their first EP the following year.
Activity
Syd Arthur play gigs and festivals consistently, developing their sound over time and building a strong following.
