Sy Smith

Sy Smith is a US singer and actress born in 1974. She begins her career fronting an all-female go-go band from Washington, DC. Her work spans electronica, funk, neo soul, R&B and soul.

Career

Smith serves as a sometime lead singer for British funk group the Brand New Heavies on their album We Won’t Stop. She also duets with Al Green on the theme song for the Showtime series Soul Food. In 2000, she appears on Ali Shaheed Muhammad’s solo debut, Shaheedullah and Stereotypes.

Her independent debut, The Syberspace Social, arrives in 2005. The album includes contributions from Anthony Hamilton, James Poyser and Victor Duplaix, and is later reissued in an expanded special edition.

Smith also appears on Me’Shell NdegeOcello’s 2006 EP The Article 3 and opens for NdegeOcello. She is also visible as a featured background singer on American Idol alongside Sharlotte Gibson and Kenya Hathaway.
