Super Whatevr

Super Whatevr is an emo-punk band from Costa Mesa that operates between indie rock, emo and alternative rock. The group forms in 2016 and ends in 2021, building a sound that combines raw, cathartic energy with a tuneful approach that draws on early-2000s indie rock.

Formation and members

Singer and guitarist Skyler McKee grows up in northern California and starts out in the hardcore scene there, playing in several bands while also writing his own songs. He later moves to Los Angeles and spends time in THRDVSN, where he works with pop producer Rob Kinelski. After moving to Huntington Beach in Orange County, he finds a local alternative scene that supports mixed styles and begins recording his own material. With encouragement from a friend, he forms Super Whatevr with guitarist Robert Rutan, bassist Thomas Waale and drummer Luke Mensink.

Releases and label work

The band’s self-released debut EP, Good Luck, helps them build a substantial following and leads to a contract with Hopeless Records. Hopeless signs the band in 2017 and reissues the EP. Their first full-length album for the label, Never Nothing, appears in 2018. For the follow-up album, Don’t You Wanna Be Glad?, the band works with Courtney Ballard, who has credits with Good Charlotte and Waterparks.

Style and development

Super Whatevr’s music reflects the mix of punk and pop influences that shape McKee’s songwriting, alongside the band’s persistent live activity. The group develops from an Orange County alternative context but keeps links to hardcore, emo-punk and indie rock throughout its work.
