Super Furry Animals
Super Furry Animals are a Welsh rock band formed in Cardiff in 1993 and active from 1993 to the present. They are associated with alternative rock, britpop, electronic, experimental rock, indie pop and indie rock.
Line-up and origins
The group’s long-term line-up consists of Gruff Rhys on lead vocals and guitar, Huw Bunford on lead guitar and vocals, Guto Pryce on bass guitar, Cian Ciaran on keyboards, synthesizers, electronics, occasional guitar and vocals, and Dafydd Ieuan on drums and vocals. An earlier version of the band includes actor Rhys Ifans as lead vocalist. The band is part of the Welsh music wave of the 1990s known as Cool Cymru, alongside Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Catatonia and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.
Recordings and chart history
Super Furry Animals release nine studio albums that reach the UK Albums Chart Top 25. Their albums include one that is certified Gold and four that are certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry. Their releases also include singles, EPs, compilation albums and collaborations. The group scores multiple UK Top 40 singles, but none reaches the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart.
Style and reputation
The band is known for an eclectic and experimental approach that combines rock, psychedelia, electronic music and pop. Publications including Billboard and NME describe Super Furry Animals as a creative and influential act in contemporary music.
