Sugababes
Sugababes are a British pop group formed in London in 1998. They begin as a trio with Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhán Donaghy, and their membership changes several times over the years. The group’s line-up includes Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen, alongside the original members.
Early releases and commercial breakthrough
Their debut album, One Touch, is released through London Records in 2000 and includes the top-ten single “Overload”. The album achieves moderate commercial success. In 2002, they follow it with Angels with Dirty Faces, then Three in 2003 and Taller in More Ways in 2005, all described as multi-platinum releases.
Line-up changes and later albums
Donaghy is replaced by Heidi Range in 2001. Buena leaves in December 2005 and is replaced by Amelle Berrabah. After a greatest hits set, the group releases Change in 2007 and Catfights and Spotlights in 2008. In 2009, Buchanan is replaced by Jade Ewen, and the group releases Sweet 7 in 2010 before signing to RCA Records and entering an indefinite hiatus in 2011 after the single “Freedom”.
Reunions, catalogue and later activity
The original line-up reunites in 2011 under the name Mutya Keisha Siobhán and releases “Flatline” in 2013. The trio regains the Sugababes name in 2019. In 2021, they reissue One Touch for its 20th anniversary, and in 2022 they release The Lost Tapes, a compilation of previously unreleased material. In 2025, they independently release the singles “Jungle”, “Weeds” and “Shook”, and undertake the Sugababes '25 Tour, their first arena tour.
Chart success and recognition
Sugababes have six UK number-one singles: “Freak like Me”, “Round Round”, “Hole in the Head”, “Push the Button”, “Walk This Way” and “About You Now”. This places them second only to the Spice Girls among British girl groups for UK chart-toppers. They also have five UK top-ten albums, four of which are certified platinum. The group receives six Brit Award nominations and wins Best British Dance Act in 2003.
