Subhumans

Subhumans are a UK anarcho-punk band from Wiltshire, England, active from 1980. The group is associated with anarcho-punk, punk and ska punk, and is known for political, anarchic lyrics.

Formation and early releases

The band records a demo in 1981. That recording reaches members of Flux of Pink Indians via Graham Burnett of New Crimes fanzine, and the reaction leads to an offer of a release on the newly formed Spiderleg label. Subhumans then begin issuing material through their own Bluurg Records label.

Activity and line-up

The group’s membership includes Dick Lucas, Andy Gale, Grant Jackson, Bruce Treasure, Trotsky and Phil Bryant. After the band splits, Lucas forms Culture Shock and Citizen Fish. Subhumans later reform for live performances and continue to maintain a strong following, including tours of North America in the 21st century.

Style and reputation

The band is identified with DIY punk record-keeping and a direct political approach. Their writing is described through subject matter that is anarchic and thought-provoking, which becomes a defining feature of their reputation.
