Steve Pilgrim is a Liverpool-based musician and drummer who also writes and performs as a solo artist. He starts drumming at the age of six and first gains commercial success with Liverpool band The Stands in 2003. Over the following years, he tours widely with acts including Oasis, Jet and The Libertines.
After leaving The Stands in 2005, he begins to focus more on songwriting and travels to Japan to collaborate with folktronica artist Yoshio Akeboshi. He develops his writing further through work with a range of artists and groups, moving between American roots music, classical gypsy influences, upbeat indie and new wave.
His collaborations include work with John Power of Cast and The La’s, Sophie Solomom, The Cuckolds and The Fools. He also drums for Paul Weller, taking over from Steve White. His solo debut album appears in 2007 and is partly recorded at Noel Gallagher’s studio. The album features warm acoustic ballads and finger-picked songs, and his solo material is described as distinct from his drumming work while remaining closely tied to acoustic songwriting.
His solo recordings are described as acoustic rather than folk, with songs that combine broad appeal, strong vocals and direct lyrics. He is associated with Liverpool and with unsigned acoustic and folk-oriented work.
