Steve Moore

Steve Moore is a NYC-based electronic artist from Pittsburgh, New York. He works as a composer, synthesizer player and bassist, and is also active as a multi-instrumentalist and sideman. His work is associated with electronic music, synthwave, ambient and progressive approaches, with a strong connection to horror-influenced soundtracks and spacey, cinematic textures.

Zombi and related work

Moore is one half of Zombi, alongside drummer A.E. Paterra. In the group he plays synthesizer and bass guitar. Zombi’s catalogue includes two self-released EPs and three releases on Relapse, and Moore’s writing in the band develops from unsettling mood and motif into more expansive progressive-rock forms. The album

Cosmos

marks a point where the music becomes more elaborate, with wider arrangements, fusion-influenced rhythmic complexity, keyboard solos and sequenced passages that recall Rush, Tangerine Dream and Jan Hammer.

Style and influences

Moore draws on university music study and on cassette-tape lessons absorbed from horror-film composers John Carpenter, Fabio Frizzi and Goblin. He is known for music shaped by 1970s and 1980s U.S. and Italian horror cinema, as well as by 1970s and 1980s AM gold and Italo-disco. His track “Sapphire” is cited by Cybernetic Broadcasting System as one of the top 100 dance tracks, and it appears on the compilation mixes Go Commando With James !@#$%^ Friedman and Cosmo Galactic Prism.

Solo releases and film music

Moore releases a solo album for Relapse, The Henge. The record uses ambience and simple recurring themes, but also includes harsher rhythmic and orchestral moments, plus guitar passages that point back to metal. He also composes for film. His credits include Murder Set Pieces and Home Sick with Zombi, The Redsin Tower with Pig Destroyer’s Scott Hull, and Christopher P. Garetano’s Horror Business. He is also attached to Son of Horror Business and to Palumbo’s Frigid.

Session and sideman work

Outside his own projects, Moore plays guitar with Red Sparowes and contributes Hammond B-3 organ to Panthers. He is also associated with Miracle, Microwaves and Titan.
