Stanley Brinks is the performing name used by André Herman Düne, a French singer-songwriter born in Paris in 1973. He is formerly a member and founding member of the folk rock trio Herman Düne, a French/Swedish group that splits in December 2006 shortly before its commercial success. After living in Berlin, Germany, he changes identity to Stanley Brinks and also uses several other names, including AHD, Ben DOPE, Klaus BONG, Ben HASCHISH, John TRAWLING, John ANDREAS and Lord Stanislas.
Style and instruments
Brinks writes songs with strongly personal text, mixing absurd or nonsensical poetry with darker, more unsettled themes. His sound is described as shifting between folk, blues and a more joyous guitar-led approach. He usually plays a 1448 Silvertone Danelectro guitar and also uses soprano saxophone. He is an admirer of Steve Lacy and Gerry Mulligan.
Calypso recordings and Kreuzberg Museum
After buying a gramophone, Brinks discovers calypso songs and lyrics from more than 30 years of Trinidadian calypso music. That interest leads to the CD-R releases Calypso and More Calypso, made repeatedly “in tone”. For these recordings he works with Clémence Freschard under the group name Kreuzberg Museum.
Performance approach
He prefers small, intimate venues for concerts, including apartment shows in Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy, the United States and Switzerland, and makes the space accessible after the performance.
Other name and group details
The names The Fox and Kreuzberg Museum are associated with his work, alongside his many aliases and his output under the Stanley Brinks name.
