Spoon

Spoon are an American indie rock band from Austin, United States, formed in 1994 by singer and guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno. Their line-up also includes Eric Harvey on keyboard, guitar, percussion and backing vocals, Rob Pope on bass and backing vocals, Alex Fischel, Ben Trokan, Gerardo Larios, Roman Kuebler, Joshua Zarbo and Andy Maguire.

Style and development

The band works across alternative rock, dance-punk, indie pop, indie rock, post-punk and rock. They build a reputation for critical acclaim and for a sound associated with Austin’s rock scene.

Albums and label history

Spoon begin with their debut album Telephono on Matador Records. They then sign to Elektra in 1998, but the contract ends soon after the release of A Series of Sneaks. In response, they issue the two-song single The Agony of Laffitte, a title that refers to Elektra A&R man Ron Laffitte. They later sign to Merge Records.

Girls Can Tell, released in 2001, sells more copies than the band’s first two releases combined. Kill the Moonlight repeats that sales pattern a year later. Gimme Fiction follows and continues the band’s rise. Their sixth studio album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, includes a bonus disc on the first pressing titled Get Nice!. Their seventh studio album, Transference, is released in 2010.

Other work

Britt Daniel writes much of the soundtrack for the 2006 film Stranger Than Fiction, and four Spoon tracks appear in the film.
