Spank Rock

Spank Rock is an American hip-hop duo from Baltimore, United States, made up of MC Spank Rock and producer Armani XXXchange (Alex Epton). Their music combines big dada, hip hop, R&B, dancehall, underground hip hop, party rap and electro.

Career

The group begins performing in Philadelphia, where it builds a local reputation before touring with Hollertronix and M.I.A. It also tours with Beck in 2006. The act is active from 200? to 2007.

Members and related acts

Alongside Armani XXXchange and MC Spank Rock, the lineup includes Chris Rockswell, Ronnie Darko and Amanda Blank. Armani XXXchange is Alex Epton, while Spank Rock is Naeem Juwan. Chris Rockswell and Ronnie Darko, also known as Devlin & Darko, are part of Baltimore Bass Connection and appear in other acts including Pase Rock.

Releases and appearances

Spank Rock releases its debut album, YoYoYoYoYo, on Big Dada in 2006. The single “Bump” is named Single of the Year by Xfm London breakfast DJ Lauren Laverne and is also used at the start of an episode of Entourage. The group appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live in January 2007, performing “Sweet Talk” and “Rick Rubin”. Its music also appears in Need for Speed: Carbon and Madden NFL 07, with “What It Look Like” featured in the former and “Backyard Betty” in the latter.

Thom Yorke includes YoYoYoYoYo in his iTunes Celebrity Playlist and names it among his favourite records of 2006.
